The Cheap Chic Couple

If we were to describe ourselves as a couple, we’d have to say we live a cheapchic lifestyle.

Our idea of the cheapchic lifestyle is being able to find that balance that enables us to enjoy the finer things in life without breaking the bank. We achieve that balance by using lots of ingenuity and creativity (think ‘barter system, flea markets, garage sales, eBay, Amazon’), good old-fashioned sweat equity (tuning in to DIY Network and having a go at a do-it-yourself project not only gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment at the end of a project, it costs pennies on the dollar).

Take our two favorite pastimes, gourmet meals and travel, for example. We love gourmet dinners (tableside Caesar salad, dry-aged porterhouse at LG’s Prime Steakhouse in Palm Springs or the melt-in-your-mouth filet mignon and rack of lamb, washed down with a bottle of Raymond at Scott’s Seafood in Costa Mesa) but we’re just as adept at taking what’s on sale at the neighborhood grocery store (yes, you CAN turn the cheapest cuts of meat and turn that into the gustatory piece de resistance of a romantic candlelit dinner that costs you no more than $10 for the entire meal). We also love to travel, but most of the time, we do it on a shoestring budget, and yet we enjoy our adventures just as fully – if not more- than couples who’ve spent three or four times as much as we did.

The cheapchic lifestyle is a mindset that’s centered around the value of the hard-earned dollar. We don’t worship money- it’s not the be-all-and-end-all, but we respect it enough to spend it wisely. Thus, we don’t believe in blowing one’s lifesavings on front-row tickets or a flashy car or a shopping spree at the most fashionable malls.

Nothing is more chic these days than caring for the environment. Although things have changed somewhat, thanks in large part to Al Gore and the phenomenon that is “An Inconvenient Truth” and to celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio who proudly drives up to the red carpet in a Prius, a lot of people still have an image of granola-chomping, funny-smelling hippies in tie-dye shirts and flipflops, going green, organic and local can also be synonymous with being stylin’.

So, in a nutshell, that’s what we, Corey and Dez, The Cheapchic Couple, are here to share with you. It’s a lifestyle that makes sense, and we hope it’s one that you share with us.

Vive le cheapchic!

-Corey and Dez
